The tough thing about this problem is that the drain and spin "sometimes works sometimes don't" as you put it.

From the description you give there is no problem in agitation only in drain and spin.

This washer is supposed to be smart enough to tell us what the problem is. Do you see any error codes when it doesn't drain or spin? See the image below for some of the codes you might see.

If the washer does not drain then it is most likely it will not spin.

There is one thing you should check. If agitation is okay then tell me if there is any water recirculating during the wash.

If you try a drain cycle does any water come out at all? While the pump is most likely the guilty part even the outer tub can prevent a drain on this washer.

See if this information helps and reply with a few more details and we'll try and pin this problem down.

The sudden appearance of a malfunction can be confusing when the washer was working fine. While you wait for the expert to diagnose the symptoms you listed, you can check the answer to a previous post if you like. I attached the link below. I hope the issue is resolved soon. http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/questions/113571-cause-washer-spin-agitate-drain-water-fine

Thank you for a very good description of the symptoms. Yes, I believe you are correct to suspect the motor drive coupler. If the washer will fill & drain but not agitate or spin then I recommend checking the motor coupler first.

I am sending you a link covering the complete step by step instructions on replacing the motor drive coupler for your Kenmore washer.

Please click on the link below to see the image in the attachment for accessing the console endcaps.

How do I replace the motor coupling on my Kenmore washer?

Q:

Why won't my washer run in the drain and spin cycles?

A:

You did not indicate if the washer will still agitate or not. Your symptom indicates a failed lid switch since it does even hum when it's in the drain and spin cycles. You indicated that you jumped the lid switch but it still would not run. I assume you put the jumper wire into the harness connector that you disconnected from the lid switch harness connector and not the connector that is secured to the top. You would need to insert the jumper wire into the two outside terminals (grey to tan) of the lid switch harness that you disconnected.

If you did have the jumper wire inserted into the two outside terminals and the motor still does not come on during the drain and spin cycles the failure is likely a loose connection, speed switch or timer failure. Change the speed switch to another spin speed to see if will operate.

If it continues to not run in the spin cycles I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your washer.
