Q:

How to prevent refrigerator drain tube from freezing.

A:

I can understand becoming frustrated with a drain line that keeps freezing. I did locate a similar question that may help while you wait for the expert. I also added the parts diagrams from Sears Parts Direct if needed. I hope these links help.

Thank you for your question. I think you will be able to do something about that. You have cleaned the drain under the evaporator coils and you have seen the defrost heater. There is a kit to install on the heater and the probe will hang into the top of the drain tube and every time the defrost heater comes on the probe will get warm and keep the water from freezing. Here is the link. Kenmore Refrigerator Model 106.9650312 Heat probe .

I hope this is helpful. If I may be of further assistance please include more details in a reply to this thread.

Thank you Bill. I have ordered the part and will install it the next time we have to tear everything apart. Meanwhile, before I posted my question, I was looking at other similar questions. It seemed that there were some that also installed a grommet at the bottom of the drain tube that prevented warm, moist air from flowing up the tube, causing ice. Now that I have your answer, I don't seem to be able to find anything about a grommet of this type. Are you familiar with it? Do you know the part number? Thanks again for your help.
