Thank you for your question. If everything is working but there is no ice forming on the evaporator, it would lead to a sealed system problem. There have been no issues of refrigerant leaks in these ice machines. This could be a low charge, the compressor may not be pumping properly or the hot gas valve may be stuck and could be causing this problem. This unit should take 6.5 ounces of 134a refrigerant. The refrigerant charge will also be listed on the model and serial tag. I hope this will help you.

Q:

Kenmore free standing ice maker #10689489996 freezes up

A:

Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com. I regret to hear that you are having issues with your icemaker and do understand your frustration. Glad to help out. Im looking at your model number 10689489996 and to check the grid, disconnect the power first. Now, pull the grid out (see image) and if you have a meter, (click on the image to enlarge) the resistance can be checked. With the harness disconnected check across the pins and it should read 4 to 5 ohms of resistance. If there is no resistance reading, the complete grid # 2313637 will need to be replaced. If this checks ok, the voltage will need to be checked to the grid. Reconnect the harness and turn the unit back on. Now check to see if 8.5 volts is being supplied to the grid. Be very careful making this check. If there is no voltage there, the transformer # 2185657 will need to be replaced. If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician
