Thank you for your question. I would not recommend cutting the side of the fill cup and trying to patch the hole. It would be difficult and would probably leak. Sometimes, especially with older models, some of the parts on the original icemaker may need to be removed and installed on the new icemaker. In this case, the icemaker cup will probably need to be removed from the original icemaker and installed on the new icemaker. You may also want to see if the straight fill tube is long enough, to reach the new fill cup, if the elbow is removed. I hope this will help you.
