Question and Answers

Q:

Kenmore Coldspot freezer section continues to frost up after parts replacement.

A:

Thank you for your question. I'm sorry you are having this problem with the refrigerator. This is an accumulative run timer and the black jumper wire will connect to terminal 1 on this model. If the complete evaporator is developing a thick frost, then it would still indicate the defrost system is not working. In this case turn the timer dial manually very slow, until the unit stops running. After a few minutes, if the element heats, then it would lead to the timer again. If the element does not heat and if the freezer temperature is below 15 degrees, then it could be a problem with either the defrost thermostat or element. If the element ohmed out ok, then it would lead to the thermostat. Now, if there is not a thick frost accumulation on the evaporator but the drain is continuing to freeze closed, there is a heat probe kit # 819043 designed to correct this type of problem. It's available at Sears PartsDirect and will have instructions included. If the buildup of ice seems to be real thick on the left side, then it would lead to an icemaker problem. I hope this will help you. If you would like more assistance, reply to this thread and I will be glad to assist you further.

Scott, I followed your advice and inspected the evaporator coil, which only had a light coating of frost. I closed the freezer door and let it run for another couple of hours and when I opened the door, the defrost cycle happened to be running. The heating element was hot, so I think the problem was as you suspected! I need the heat probe kit for the drain, since it was again frozen up. I defrosted it and poured a bleach / water mix down it to kill any mildew. I will be ordering the heat probe kit and installing it on my next visit to our vacation home in a few weeks. Thanks again for your help!
