Question and Answers

Q:

refrigerator collecting moisture especially on cover #21 in refrigerator top. All vents seem clear. Moisture drips off cover #21 onto liner bottom + shelves.

A:

We have all had this problem. Thanks for asking. Some simple things you can check are a door that is not shutting properly or the door gasket has a tear in it. Also check to make sure it is not set for energy savings sometimes that will cause it to condensate more especially if it is opened and shut a lot. There is an informative posting by an expert re clogged tubing. I have attached the link below. Hope this helps!

From the description listed, it sounds like the drain is probably frozen. Water will leak into the refrigerator when the drain system freezes up. Every time the unit goes into a defrost cycle, water will run down into the refrigerator, instead of down the drain. To clear the drain, remove everything in the freezer so the back panel can be removed. First disconnect power to the unit. With the panel removed, you will see the evaporator coil and directly under the coil is the drain trough (pan). The trough will probably be full of ice that will need to be removed. With the ice out of the trough, you will be able to see the drain hole which will be plugged with ice. Use hot water to clear the drain hole. Keep working the hot water into the hole and wiping the excess water. This can take quite awhile depending on how deep the ice is. This will need to be done until you get a good water flow down to the bottom drain pan. With the drain system clear, water should stop leaking in the refrigerator. If you need more assistance, please resubmit your question, with additional details. If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Safety Notice: Be sure to disconnect the appliance before performing any troubleshooting procedures. If you are not comfortable with doing any voltage checks or repairs that might be recommended, please contact a local service provider for repairs. Be aware that there could be sharp edges inside the appliance that could cause cuts or other injuries to yourself or others.

I have the same problem with the drain freezing.I have to unfreeze in every couple of weeks for the past 6 months.Could someone please tell me why or what I need to replace or do.I think the first time we un-froze it ,we poked a few holes in the metal cover .I tried to fill them with glue but the water still seems to go under there and freeze and water drains into my frig.Should I replace the cover? Is that the problem or do I need something else also. The frig is 13 years old.How long do they usually last if I do buy this part for like $80?

Hi,

Thank you for your question. It is concerning when the refrigerator is not functioning correctly. Troubleshooting the icemaker is easy enough. Open the freezer door and tape the door switch closed. Pull the cover off the module and check the voltage on connector l to n. do you has 120 volts AC there? If yes use the chart to do the other test. If no volts ther the black wire is defective and it is a sealed in to the cabiner wire and is not repairable.
br> Always unplug or de-energize electrical equipment before removing covers or attempting service. Be careful and wear appropriate hand protection when working around sharp metal parts

I hope this is helpful. If I may be of further assistance please include more details in a reply to this post.

Bill, Following the flow chart, it comes to the conclusion that it's the thermostat. I replaced the ice maker as a unit which has a thermostat in it. Maybe it's defective. The wiring diagram is unreadable. I hate to be a pest but can I get a better image, please ?

Mike, The unit ounded like it had a faulty thermostat. I will send along a picture of the diagram but the best way to view is by clicking the link. We are allowed to only send pictures not a PDF file. So clarity is sometimes limited.
