Q:

Why can't I keep the temperature in my Kenmore refrigerator below 40 degrees?

A:

With ice forming on the back wall of the freezer and diminished cooling in the refrigerator compartment, your symptoms point toward a defrost system problem. Sometimes, you can defrost the unit by unplugging it and emptying the food. Leave the refrigerator and freezer doors open to maximize air flow through the unit. After about 24 hours, the unit should be defrosted and will likely cool properly when restarted.

This condition may return if you have a component failure or clogged defrost drain.

In this case, a service technician would normally unplug the refrigerator and remove the back wall of the freezer to determine the cause of the frost and ice build up. I recommend calling a service technician to complete this type of procedure.
