Question and Answers

Why is the back of the freezer frosting up?

When the back panel of a freezer frosts up, it indicates a defrost problem. The most common defrost problem is, with the timer or in this case, the defrost control board. A good way to check this, will be to manually advance the board into a defrost cycle. Now, this check needs to done, when the freezer is cold (freezing). To cycle this board the following needs to be done in order:

  1. Disconnect power to the unit
  2. Turn the thermostat off
  3. Reconnect power to the unit (leave the thermostat off)
Within 3 - 8 seconds after this has been done, the board should energize the heater circuit. After a few minutes you should be able to hear some hissing and popping in the freezer. This will be the ice melting on the heat element. If you do hear this, it indicates, the defrost board # 2304099 is not advancing and will need to be replaced. If nothing happens, some voltage and resistance checks will need to be made. It could still be a board problem but will most likely be a problem with the element or bi-metal. A technician may be needed to make these checks. I'm listing a site you can check to have a technician come out. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .
