Question and Answers

Q:

My Kenmore Model:106.73152301 isn't cooling properly like it normally would, why is it defrosting for extended periods?

A:

I know that it can be very frustrating to have issues with your refrigerator. From what you are describing it sounds like the defrost timer is failing and needs to be replaced. This is what controls the amount of time the defrost system works. This is part number 428493. There are two screws on the back side of the control panel. Remove the screws and lower the back side of the panel and pull it towards the back to release the front clips. Remove the wiring from each of the terminals and install them onto the new timer. The remove the old timer and install the new one. If you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself, please click on the link to schedule service: Sears Home Services. Click on "Get Started" and follow the directions, click on the red "NEXT" button to continue. I hope this helps. Please feel free to let me know if you need further assistance. We are having the same issue with the freezer going into what appears to be extended defrost cycles. I replaced the defrost timer but the issue continued. The freezer will hold the temp for days but then goes up until items start thawing out. I have removed most items to a second refrigerator. I noticed that if I (out of frustration) slap the freezer above the control box the fan goes on or off. Today I reinstalled the original defrost timer. Please advise how I can diagnose the problem. What other parts would typically cause this problem? The temp controls?, evap fan motor?, loose wire?, etc?

Thanks for contacting ManageMyLife.com. I understand how frustrating and messy it is having trouble with your water dripping inside the refrigerator. We are here to help. I suspect the freezer is full of ice behind the panels. The following steps will help you fix this yourself.

  1. Unplug the refrigerator
  2. Remove all the food and shelves in the freezer.
  3. Unplug the ice maker in the freezer.
  4. Loosen and remove the 3 screws holding the ice maker to the left wall. Next, remove the ice maker.
  5. Remove the screws holding the back panel in place.
  6. Use a heat gun or blow dryer and melt all the ice.
  7. Soak up the water using old towels. Also keep melting and soaking up the water, until the drain hole is clear.
  8. Pour a cup of hot water down drain tube too make sure there is no ice plugging it up. If it is plugged melt the ice and retest with the hot water.
  9. Check the bottom of freezer and dry up any water.
  10. Make sure everything is dry. Next, install the back panel.
  11. Install ice maker and plug refrigerator back in and turn on.
If the problem reoccurs, a part may have to be installed, to keep the drain hole from clogging up. I hope this helps.
