Question and Answers

Q:

why isnt my ice dispenser working?

A:

Ice on demand is such a great convenience in today's refrigerators. I did locate a previous expert post for diagnosing an ice dispenser for this model if you would like to check the link below while you wait for your expert.

Barbara H. provided a link for a previous answer that covers some aspects of this type of failure in the above response. Here is another copy of that link: Ice dispenser does not dispense

According to your description, you could have a bad switch pad, a failed control board or a wiring failure in that system. I recommend that you unplug the refrigerator and check the wiring connections first. That previous answer shows how to access the components in this dispenser. The wiring diagram for the dispenser is shown in the first image below. If you can find a correct a wiring problem, you may be able to repair this failure.

If you find no wiring problem, you can reassemble the unit use the diagnostic test mode shown in the second image to test components on this dispenser system. This may point you in the direction of your failure.

If you need parts, you can order them from the Sears PartsDirect website.

If you need more help, reply with additional details and we will assist you further.

This is a complicated system to diagnose and repair. If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

thanks for those tech sheets i ran the diagnostic and everything checks out so the problem has to be either the motor or the power delivery to the motor if you get the chance you can check out the thread i started for my issue at http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/questions/291416-ice-dispenser-stopped-working-parts-check it has more details on the specific problem i am having.

Hello Liam. Thanks for the link to that other thread. It appears that you are only getting 50vdc to that motor from that Gemini control board. Be sure that you check the DC voltage with polarity in both directions using your meter. That is a motor that will rotate one way for crushed and the other way for cubed ice. It is likely that you will need to check the voltage coming out of that P13 connector on that Gemini control board. If that voltage is only 50vdc then that control board will apparently need to be replaced as indicated in that original thread. I added a direct link for that control board (part W10210789) below this response if you need to order it. NOTE: Use extreme caution when checking live voltage. You seem to indicate that you are comfortable with making those checks. Wear proper safety equipment (electrical safety gloves and safety goggles) when checking live voltage. Unplug the refrigerator as soon as live voltage checks are completed. Unplug the refrigerator before accessing and replacing internal components. If you are getting the proper voltage (115 to 120vdc) out of that control board then you may have a wiring harness failure between that control board and the motor. I hope that this additional information helps. If you need more assistance, let us know. I will follow that original thread as well.

Did you check the door switch for the freezer? It is supposed to stop ice delivery when the door is open. I'm not shure if it is the same as the light switch, it probably is and is either a double pole or connected to a relay.

the switch is fine. i used the diagnostic mode and verified all signals are correct. i have narrowed down the issue to either a bad motor if the 50VDC i cited early is within specification or if that is not and the motor is good then improper voltage is being delivered to the motor. at this point I am leaning toward the voltage being delivered is wrong. as everything else on the refrigerator is functioning fine that would lead me to believe that the power supply is fine and that would leave me with only the gemini flash board or anything between it and the motor as possible culprits. I am hoping there is a relay between the board and the motor that has gone bad but have not been able to verify yet if there even is one.

Thank you for your question. I know it can be disappointing when the ice dispenser stops working. You have done some nice troubleshooting. This motor does work on 120vdc. The main board # W10210789, which is the board with all the wire connections next to the compressor, will need to be replaced. This is the board that supplies the voltage to the motor. I hope this will help you. If you would like more assistance reply to this thread and I will be glad to assist you further.
