Question and Answers

Q:

Stopped making ice 10658979701 Kenmore Elite Side by side refrigerator

A:

Hello glad to help.  Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com

I am sorry and do understand your frustration when there is problems with the refrigerator not making ice.

Glad to help out.   Im  looking at your Kenmore Refrigerator model number 10658979701.

When you press for the ice.   Do you hear a pumping type sound from the back of the refrigerator?  You have a dual valve so it is very likely that you can get water out of the dispenser and not have the ice working or vice versa.   If you do not then it will be the solenoid/waterpump from the back side.   If you hear the sound then most likely it is a switch you are needing.

Q:

Why did my refrigerator stop cooling?

A:

If there is no air blowing in either compartment, check the back wall in the freezer for a heavy frost build-up or if the fan is on. If the fan is on but there is also a heavy frost, it indicates a defrost problem. If the fan is not on, it could be defective. This board can be put into a diagnostic mode that may help determine the problem. Press the control on button and the C button simultaneously for 2 seconds to enter diagnostics. Press the FC temp up button, to advance it through diagnostics. Step 3 is for the evaporator fan motor. If the motor runs in this step, the control board will need to be replaced. If it still won't run, the motor will probably need to be replaced but a voltage check would need to be made, to determine for sure.

If the motor is running but it's frosting up, then the defrost mode needs to be checked. It will be step 6 in the diagnostic mode. If the heating element comes on now, the board will need to be replaced. If it doesn't, the element or bi-metal will probably be open. The back panel in the freezer will need to be removed to be able to check the element and bi-metal and a volt/ohm meter will be needed. A technician may be needed to make these checks. If you need more assistance, you can resubmit your question with more details.
