The most common cause of your issue is the defrost system, based on the symptoms you've provided. Test the control board to see if it needs replacing. Unplug the unit from the wall for 30 seconds. Turn the thermostat off then plug the unit back in. In about 10 seconds, the board will enter the defrost mode. If the defrost heater glows and heats, the board will need replacing. If it does not, you may just need to get a new defrost heater. If it fails to go into defrost mode at all, the defrost bi-metal may have to be replaced.
