Question and Answers

Q:

How do I know if it's the Solenoid or Motor that's not working properly when my ice lever doesn't dispense ice pressed and everything else is fine ?

A:

Thank you for your question. I'm sorry you are having this problem with the ice dispenser. If the auger motor is not running or making any kind of sound when the lever is pressed, it could be a problem with the motor itself, it could be the switch inside the dispenser or it could be a wiring problem. The solenoid only controls a gate inside the bucket for cubed ice. Now, a good check for this will be to, press the ice lever in slow and listen for a clicking sound. If you do not hear this sound, it will indicate that either the switch has failed or the actuator is not making contact with the switch. To check this, the front cover will need to be removed. I'm attaching a picture with instructions to remove the front cover. Be sure to disconnect the power first. With the cover off, you will be able to press the lever and watch to see if the actuator is making contact with the switch. I hope this will help you. If you do hear the clicking sound, then some voltage checks will need to be made to determine, if the motor has failed or if there is a wiring problem. This will require a meter and you will need to be confident in your repair skills to safely make a voltage check. If you would like more assistance, reply to this thread and I will be glad to assist you further.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services.

Thank you for your question. It is good sometimes to have a spare garage refrigerator to cool water and ice. To check the start mechanism on the compressor, you will need a volt/ohm meter and amprobe. Normally a technician is required to make this check.
Always unplug or de-energize electrical equipment before removing covers or attempting service. Be careful and wear appropriate hand protection when working around sharp metal parts.

If the compressor is not starting at all and it doesn't even try, the best check is to ohm it out. First disconnect the power from the unit and now remove the start kit (relay/overload) from the compressor. This will allow you to check the compressor terminals. Using an ohmmeter now, place the probes across each of the terminals. If there is no reading at all, it means the compressor winding is open and the compressor will have to be replaced. If you get a reading across all 3 terminals, the compressor is probably ok.
If the compressor is trying to start but just hums and quits, this could be a locked (stuck) compressor or the start kit is weak. The only way to determine this is to use a kit called a hard start kit on the compressor. If the compressor starts and runs (now the amprobe will be needed to check the run amps) and the amps are ok, the reading is 1 to 1.5 amps, the start kit will need to be replaced. Here the link to the start kit: Kenmore Refrigerator start kit for model 106.56726600 .
If it still won't start, the compressor will need to be replaced. This is a job I recommend having a technician perform. Here is the Service link: Sears Home Services .

I hope you have found this information helpful. If you have other questions reply back to this thread.

Q:

How do you remove the refrigerator door handles from a Kenmore side by side model #106.56726600?

A:

To remove the door handles on this model, slide the handle upward, to release if from the screws (see picture). Sometimes the handles can be tight and if so, apply more pressure. Refer to owner's manual as listed below. If you need more assistance, please resubmit your question, with additional details.
