A:

Update: After reading several similar questions/answers I attempted to force it into defrost mode, but did not notice anything. Next I manually defrosted freezer (freezer coils were heavily defrosted & vent to fridge was blocked), now system seems to work fine. Fridge is maintaining 40 degrees Fahrenheit, cool air is moving into fridge, and ice dispenser is functioning properly. I am monitoring, but would you recommend any service at this point?

Thank you for choosing SearsPartsDirect.com. I will be more than happy to assist you. I can understand the frustration with having an issue with you unit. Let’s see what we can do for you.

Normally when there's an issue with cooling in the fridge, and the fan in the freezer is working, it is the diffuser. Most of the time the thermostat goes out when the diffuser is closed and it never opens it. With the freezer still running the diffuser will get frozen closed. So it could be just the thermostat. But I recommend replacing both at the same time, especially since you need a fridge to be running properly.

Hope this information has helped you. If you are not comfortable doing this repair you can click here to schedule a technician or call toll free 1-800-469-4663. If you have any further questions or concerns, you will have to post a new question. Again, thank you for choosing SearsPartsDirect.com.

I appreciate the information. The fridge and freezer both seem to be working well (still), would you still recommend replacing the diffuser and thermostat or wait to see if it happens again. The reason I ask this is we had some power failures and a lot of unseasonable humidity just before it "froze".
