I'm sorry I didn't get to this question quicker.

If the unit was unplugged then transfer all the food in the refrigerator section to the freezer. That should keep things cold for at least 24 hours.

Next I suggest you remove the rear cover and the front kickplate and check for a build up on lint/dust/pet hair on the condenser. You can use a vacuum extension to clean the lint off the condenser.

The compressor and fan are not likely to catch fire.

The compressor may have start running really hot and this might have been what you smelled. A compressor that is to hot to touch would indicate a compressor problem.

By now you might even try turning the unit back on and see if it start up okay and starts to cool. It might take 24 hours to start freezing again but after about an hour you can touch the condenser coils and see if they are hot. If the condenser is hot then most likely the sealed system is okay.

Let me know what you find if anything and we'll try to make some other suggestions. I can understand you wanting to check as much as possible before scheduling a $129 dollar service call.

You can reply and go to the front of the line so I should be able to get back to you tomorrow.
