Question and Answers

Q:

ice maker not working Kenmore 106.54789801

A:

Thank you for choosing SearsPartsDirect.com and being a valued member.  I can certainly understand how frustrating it can be when your icemaker is not working properly.

1. Check the temperature of the freezer because if it is fewer than 17 degrees F it wont make ice.
2.Check if your water fill spout is plugged with ice, if it is then it wont make ice.
3. Check to see if water is getting to the water inlet valve.
4.Use an OHM meter to check the continuity of the water inlet valve. If it does not have any continuity then you need to replace your water valve. If it does then the icemaker itself is the problem and may need to be replaced.

You can also visit searpartsdirect.com for parts, diagrams, and repair information.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Thank you for your question. Have a great day.

SAFETY NOTICE: Be sure to disconnect power to the unit before performing any repairs. If you are not comfortable with doing any voltage checks that might be recommended, please contact your local service provider for repairs. Be aware that there could be sharp edges inside the appliance that could cause cuts or other injuries to yourself or others.

I know that it can be very frustrating to have issues with your ice maker. Several different problems could prevent the ice maker from producing cubes in this refrigerator. If you have not replaced the water filter within the last 6 months, this could be causing your problem. Check the flow coming out of the water dispenser. If it is weak, remove the water filter in bottom grill of the refrigerator. Push the button beside the filter and it should pop out. It has an automatic bypass in the housing so it will not leak when you use the dispenser with the filter removed. Try the water dispenser and see if the flow significantly improves with the filter removed. If it does, then replacing the filter may fix your ice maker problem.

If the filter is apparently not the problem, I recommend that you check the alignment of the ice bucket to make sure that it is properly situated in the inside of the freezer door. If it is not installed properly, it can block the infrared level sensing beam. Make sure that the switch for the ice maker (on the right inside wall of the freezer) is in the "ON" position. With the freezer door open, check the red LED status light beside the ice maker switch. It should blink twice, pause for one second and repeat. This indicates that the optics are working and that the beam is blocked. Push in on the flapper door covering the emitter on the left side freezer to clear the path between the emitter and receiver and see if the LED light shines steady on. If it does then the boards that detect the level are working properly. If the level sensing system does not pass this diagnostic test, then you will likely need to replace the emitter and received control boards. The technical information on these control boards is shown in the first two images below.

If the control boards are okay, I recommend that you check the fill tube above the ice maker to see if it may be frozen. To access this tube, you will likely need to unplug the refrigerator and remove the ice maker as shown in the third image. If the fill tube is frozen, you may be able to thaw it out using a heat gun (hair dryer) or a warm wash cloth. If you squeeze the tube and it does not feel "crunchy" like it has ice in then it should be okay. The third image shows an advanced diagnostic test where you can attempt to cycle the ice maker manually. If you are able to arrange an insulated jumper wire and cycle the ice maker in this manner, you may be able to determine the cause of your problem.

NOTE: This ice maker system is complicated to diagnose and repair. Do not attempt any procedures described below unless you are completely confident in your technical ability to safely complete them. Unplug the refrigerator before accessing internal components. If you need parts, you can order them from the Sears PartsDirect website. If you would like to schedule service, just click on this link: Sears Home Services.  I hope this helps. Thank you for your question. I'm sorry you are having this problem with your new refrigerator. If the unit is not running, press the filter and units buttons at the same time for 3 seconds. This turns the unit on and the same procedure will turn the unit off. There is no separate switch. If it is running but not cooling, a technician will need to check it. I'm listing a site you can access, to have a tech come out. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services . You also have the option to have this unit exchanged. I hope this will help you. If you would like more assistance, reply to this thread and I will be glad to assist you further.
