Question and Answers

Q:

kenmore fridge is not cold. Fan is working, coils are not frozen but the freezer is not that cold and the fridge isn't cold either.

A:

Some appliance malfunctions can wait but the refrigerator and freezer require more immediate attention. While you wait for the expert to review your model to respond, I did find a more general answer and attached below if you wish to check. Another option is to go ahead and schedule a technician at the Sears Home Services link below.

Check to see if the compressor is running. If not, you could have a bad compressor or a bad start relay on that compressor.

If the compressor is running but you do not see a frost pattern on the evaporator fins inside the freezer, then you have a sealed system problem that will need to be repaired by a service technician. Here is a link for the Sears Service website: Sears Home Services .

If the freezer does develop a frost pattern properly when the compressor is running, then you could have an air flow problem as described in that link that is posted in the above response.

This general information may help you with this refrigerator/freezer cooling problem. If you need more help, reply with additional details.

I'm not sure if the compressor was running or not. However; each time I reset the on/off control, both sides of the frig worked properly, although, for a short time. If the compressor was bad, would it allow the frig to work at all? A frost pattern definitely developed on the fins. I had even placed a bowl of cool water that even froze solid and the freezer made ice over night (before it shut down). I don't think it is an air flow issue...

Since the refrigerator and freezer will cool properly for a short time as you are describing, the compressor and the sealed system may be okay. The frost pattern on the evaporator indicates that the compressor is working when it is running. Since it is not running consistently, you could have a problem with the condenser fan or the control. Check that condenser fan next to the compressor to see if it is running when the compressor is running. IF that condenser fan is not running, then you will probably need to unplug the refrigerator and replace that fan. If the condenser fan is running properly, you will need to have a service technician check the control system to determine why the compressor keeps shutting off. You could have a compressor that is overheating even though it works properly when it is running.
