Question and Answers

Q:

Kenmore refrigerator 52012100 - freezer and refrigerator do not work, though I can hear a whirring sound

A:

Thanks for contacting manage my life about your refrigerator model 10652012100; sorry you are having a problem, I will be glad to assist you. Based on your description, it is unclear as to what the sound you are hearing is, however I suspect that you are hearing the condenser fan motor in the back bottom of the refrigerator. With no cooling in either compartment, I also suspect that the compressor is not running, and the compressor is the heart of cooling/freezing.    Normally if the condenser fan runs, the compressor should also run because it is being called by the thermostat and defrost timer. This could mean that the compressor has failed._Always disconnect power supply before servicing the appliance and when testing live voltage be sure to wear proper safety equipment (gloves and eye protection) also be aware of sharp metals on product_  You can check the wiring to the compressor for breaks or burnt connections. You can also inspect the condenser coil located under the unit, if it gets clogged with lint and dust air flow cannot cool the system causing the compressor to overheat, clean and allow cool down time then retry operation. I hope this helps, if you need additional help reply with more details and I will be happy to respond. If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services. Ron H.

A:

First make sure the condenser fan and freezer fans are working.

The problem might be the control thermostat or the unit may be getting stuck in defrost. Next time it stops running try tapping the thermostat and see if it comes back on.

As long as the unit freezes there most likely is not a leak of the refrigerant.

Intermittent problems can be difficult diagnosing and repairing.

Check the fans and reply with any additional details for further assistance.
