Q:

Could the compressor be bad if my Kenmore refrigerator isn't cooling and the unit overheated and shut down?

A:

Could the compressor be bad if my Kenmore refrigerator isn't cooling and the unit overheated and shut down?

The most common problems for refrigerators not cooling is a condenser fan motor (the one that cools the compressor) is out. This is usually caused by loss of grease or oil. There is no way to oil them so they have to be replaced. You can unplug the unit for a few minutes and then restore the power. If it works for a while but then quits, more than likely this will be the problem. If the fan doesn't cool the compressor it will overheat and shut down coming on intermittently then shutting off again. Check the compressor area for burnt or stalled components ex. fan motor, relay, overload.

If you do not feel comfortable checking these parts, I highly recommend a technician coming out to diagnose and repair your refrigerator.

Q:

Why is the compressor not running on my refrigerator?

A:

I think you are headed in the right direction with this problem. The box you are referring to is the compressor starting device. Replacing this will usually take care of the problem you are having with your refrigerator. The repair is simple & comes with instructions.
