The drawing I have for this is not very good, but it looks like at towards the top of the spindle and quill there is a collar with set screws that hold the spindle in place. On the newer models the spindle is tapered and mates up with the quill in that manner. The drawing of this model does not appear to be that way. I see a collar (key 23) and set screw (key 41) that appear to hold the spindle in place.

I would check at the top of the quill to see what the situation with that collar and set screw are. It's very possible that the set screw just needs to be tightened. If it's not that then it would have to be those snap rings you mentioned.
