Q:

Engine will not start 24777638 Craftsman Chipper shredder

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

I am sorry to hear of the issue you're having getting the engine started. I know how frustrating that is to have happen.

You have covered the majority of the basics with the tune-up procedures. You mentioned that you replaced the gas; does that mean you had old gas in the tank and fuel system? If so, you probably have a gunked up carburetor.

I recommend always running the engine dry before storage, and never store a product with fuel unless you have added Fuel Stabilizer, which keeps fuel fresh for a year. Even then, I would run it dry.
If the fuel has gone stale and been stored in the tank for approx. 9 months, you may have a seriously gunky carb, fuel tank, and possibly rotted fuel lines. This ethanol mixed fuel is really hard on fuel systems, especially when it goes bad.

It will more than likely be spark or fuel related. I would start by pulling the spark plug, reattach it to the boot, and ground the base of the plug to the metal cylinder while a helper is pulling the rewind starter. If there is spark from the base of the plug, spark is good.

I would pull the carb from the engine. With a full can of carb cleaner, a wire brush, and a bread tie wire to poke through and clean the main jet; I would recommend a very thorough cleaning. Start by taking off the float bowl. Douse it very liberally with carb cleaner, and undo the pin for the float, and remove the needle and float. Clean them very thoroughly with the wire brush and carb cleaner. Pay close attention to the seat the needle sits in and clean it well. Once clean, start brushing the carb bowl and body and make sure you get all the varnish out. It may take three or four brushings with carb cleaner dousing in-between. From there, take the straw of the carb cleaner and shoot carb cleaner through any little hole or passageway of the carb. Shoot out the throat of the carb and poke the main jet with the bread tie wire. You have to make sure you get everything the first time, if you leave anything behind, it’s likely to reclog once you have it reassembled.
Check the fuel lines for cracking or deterioration. If so, replace them. The tank is probably going to be grimy as well. Shoot carb cleaner into the tank and remove the fuel line so the varnished fuel/carb cleaner mix can drain. Shoot it until the carb cleaner comes out mostly clear without stale fuel.

If you need any of the engine related parts such as the carburetor or carb rebuild kit, the engine model number is 20T212-0835-F1. You would plug that into Sears Parts to see the engine breakdown.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

Q:

how to tow my chipper shreader around with my lawn tractor.

A:

I know how important it is to have detailed information about your chipper to make sure it is attached properly to the tractor. I did some research and I was able to find the owners manual for your chipper. I hope this helps with attaching the chipper to your tractor while you wait for your expert response.

Thank you for your question.

I looked up the model number you submitted. On sears.com I did not see where it said this model was towable. I posted the specifications in the image below. Click on the image to enlarge it. I know we offer other models that are towable. Could you have gotten this model mixed up with one of our others?

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you for using Manage my life.

mark T EXPERT this chipper has the exact same framework as the 77638 model as a matter of fact I can see no difference between the two other than the model no. And this one addresses towing as yard tow able only. So if this one can be then so should the other since the frames are identical. The description doesn't say one way or another.

Troy,
I looked up the other model number. Yes, this one does say it is towable. I could not find any tow bar listed for it. I contacted the manufacture to see if they can give me the information. As soon as I hear from them, I will post their response.
